These days, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is incredibly common, and is almost expected to accompany any woman’s period. It is so common that miseries, such as cramping, heavy periods, and extreme irritability and emotional imbalance, are accepted as “normal.” Those side effects should not be the norm. In fact, your period should come and go without much of an issue. Normal is noticing your period is coming for a couple of days; your co-workers, extended family, and the drive-thru guy at Starbucks shouldn’t know about it, too.
Cramping, heavy periods, acne, etc. Why are they all so common today, but so much less common twenty to fifty years ago? If we look a little deeper into the reason for these issues that accompany our periods, a common sense answer is obvious: Chronic stress causes Adrenal Dysfunction, which causes a decrease in progesterone. The decrease of this hormone in relation to estrogen feeds the psychological, emotional, and physical symptoms of miserable periods.
Nowadays, the usual, conventional assessment and treatment of PMS leads to the recommendation of the birth control pill (or rings, shots, etc.), which carries risk and is completely unnatural; your body is being tricked into not ovulating, and that’s just wrong!
The treatment is to balance the stress response (AKA: heal the Adrenal Dysfunction), not to load you up with estrogen via prescribed birth control. Each woman’s “fix” is individualized, but essentially we must stimulate the rest and digest response in your body and calm the fight and flight response to chronic stress. This is easier said than done, of course, but with guidance and perhaps a supplement or two, quite possible. Your mood, libido, and vitality will then balance. Ultimately, PMS is a symptom of Adrenal Dysfunction, and not a diagnosis in and of itself.
