Natural Solutions to Increase Stomach Acid and Improve Digestion

Despite what you may have been led to believe by conventional medicine propaganda, the most common cause of symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, gas, and belching is low stomach acid, not too much (read this post for more information on how low stomach acid is jeopardizing your health). According to Jonathon Wright, MD (author of “Why Stomach Acid is Good for You“), approximately 90% of Americans produce too little stomach acid. Low stomach acid impairs digestion and leads to a wide variety of health problems that include:

  • Heartburn
  • GERD
  • Indigestion and bloating
  • Burping or gas after meals
  • Excessive fullness or discomfort after meals
  • Constipation and/or diarrhea
  • Chronic intestinal infections
  • Undigested food in stools
  • Food allergies, intolerances, and sensitivities
  • Acne
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Mineral and nutrient deficiencies (including iron and/or vitamin B12 deficiency)
  • Dry skin or hair
  • Weak or cracked nails
  • Asthma
  • Depression
  • Osteoporosis
  • Any autoimmune disease diagnosis

From a holistic health perspective, bringing the body back into balance often starts by addressing the foundation of digestion. You are not only what you eat, but what you are able to digest and absorb, and for many, proper digestion can’t be brought into balance without first correcting low stomach acid production. The following are some natural methods to increase stomach acid production and improve digestion:

brainEat sitting down and while in a calm, relaxed state: The process of digestion truly begins in the brain. The mere sight, smell, or thought of food triggers reflexes in the brain that result in increased stomach acid secretion. This process occurs through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for most restorative functions in the body, including that of digestion. Unfortunately, many of us are living in a perpetual state of activation of the sympathetic nervous system, known as the “fight or flight” response. We are continuously stressed and pressed for time, which may result in eating hurried meals on-the-go, in the car, at the desk, and often while multi-tasking. This type of rushing through a meal and lack of focus on what you are eating does not allow for proper activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which results in less stomach acid secretion. To take advantage of the maximum secretion of stomach acid, make sure to calm and relax yourself before eating. If particularly stressed, take a few moments to close your eyes and focus on deep breathing. Always sit down to eat, if possible at a kitchen or dining table, and eliminate as many distractions as possible.

chew Chew your food properly: Mechanical digestion of food begins in the mouth. While chewing food properly won’t necessarily increase stomach acid production, it will make it easier for the process of digestion to continue once in the stomach. Most people rush through meals so quickly that they gulp down food without chewing adequately and this can put a significant strain on a stomach that is already low in stomach acid. A good guideline for proper chewing is 20-30 chews per bite. If you aren’t used to proper chewing, this may seem like a lot. Try putting down your fork in-between bites and counting your chews until you get a feel for adequate chewing.

Bread_and_grainsEliminate food sensitivities: Food sensitivities are associated with low stomach acid production. The best way to tell if you have a sensitivity to a particular food is to eliminate it for a period of time (I usually recommend 30 days) and monitor your symptoms. If your symptoms improve drastically, and then return when you reintroduce the food, it is likely that you have a sensitivity to that food. Although it is possible to develop a sensitivity to nearly any food, these are some common food sensitivities:

  • Wheat (and Gluten)
  • Dairy
  • Soy
  • Eggs
  • Nuts
  • Corn
  • A variety of food additives and preservatives
  • Nightshades (especially for those dealing with autoimmune issues)

Following a nutrient-dense, whole food lifestyle, such as Paleo, that eliminates all processed foods, grains, legumes, and dairy will easily remove most of these common food sensitivity culprits from your diet. The Paleo Autoimmune Protocol, which additionally restricts eggs, nuts and seeds, and nightshades will target the remainder of the common offenders.

Equate_Ibuprofen_Bottle_and_PillsBe aware of other stomach irritants: There are many substances that are irritating to the lining of the stomach and can impact the production of stomach acid or have a direct effect on the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Certain foods, such as hot peppers, spicy foods, citrus, tomatoes, caffeine, and alcohol may be problematic. Medications such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors, and H2 blockers are intended to work by lowering stomach acid or interfering with the natural action of stomach acid. Also, there are many groups of medications, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antibiotics, bronchodilators, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, nitrates, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, and anticholinergics that are associated with a weakened LES and/or gut lining irritation. As with any prescription medication, if you are considering reducing or stopping your use of the medication, you should first discuss it with your prescriber.

The next group of suggestions involve using natural remedies to increase and support stomach acid production. **WARNING: If you are currently being treated for gastrointestinal reflux disease, peptic ulcers, Barret’s esophagus, or any other serious upper GI disorder, I recommend that you consult with an appropriate holistic health practitioner prior to attempting these remedies on your own.

Lemon/Apple Cider Vinegar Water: To temporarily increase the acidity of the stomach, drink a small amount of fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar added to room temperature water about 15-20 minutes prior to eating. It is important that the water is not too cold because cold water can interfere with the digestion. If using lemon, squeeze half a lemon in 8 oz. of water. For apple cider vinegar, add 1 tablespoon in 8 oz. of water. If consuming apple cider vinegar or lemon juice in water regularly, I recommend drinking it through a straw and brushing your teeth well after in order to protect the enamel of your teeth.

Digestive Bitters: Another great option for increasing stomach acidity are digestive bitters, which can be found in most health food stores. Digestive bitters tap into the body’s neuro-lingual response that occurs when you taste something bitter. The bitter taste stimulates increased stomach acid production, as well as other digestive juices. Follow the dosing directions on the bottle.

Betaine HCL Supplementation: If you taking any anti-inflammatory medication, such as corticosteroids or NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil, etc.), it is important that you do not attempt betaine HCL supplementation due to an increased risk of GI bleeding and ulcers.** Although supplementing with lemon juice in water, apple cider vinegar in water, or digestive bitters can be helpful in mild cases, many people will need something stronger to help bring stomach acid production back into balance. Betaine HCL supplementation provides the same type of acid produced naturally by the stomach. It increases the acidity of the stomach to support proper digestion. Often, by supplementing with betaine HCL for a period of time, the body will gradually shift to a state of balance, the stomach will begin producing adequate amounts of its own acid, and supplementation will no longer be needed. The dose and length of time needed to supplement with betaine HCL varies for each individual though and some people may require long-term support. Although betaine HCL can be obtained at most health food stores, I recommend working with an informed holistic health practitioner for best results.

    After two decades of doctors diagnosing my stomach problems as everything from GERD to IBS, I met a lovely woman that was into holistic approaches. She “diagnosed” my symptoms in 5 minutes. I was blowing up like a beach ball every night, the pain was worse than all the contractions during child birth. My mother and daughter suffered the same pains. The only relief I could find would be to sit in a tub full of the hottest water I could take and have hot, wet towels across my stomach. Puts a real damper on your social life. She said I wasn’t suffering from too much acid, but not enough in my stomach. She recommended Betaine HCL. It was like a miracle. I took it twice a day for two weeks and after started tapering off. The only time I take it now is if I feel a burning sensation in my chest or the lower back pain that would proceed an attack before. I have been pain free since starting Betaine HCL.It’s amazing. My daughters story is the same after she started taking it. No more pain for her either and an 8.00 bottle of Betaine HCL has replaced her 100.00 prescription. My only regret is that my mother didn’t know about it before she died two years ago. I do have a question. We have a forth generation, 5 year old showing the same symptoms. She doesn’t complain about pain (ours started in our twenties) but her stomach bloats up terribly after eating. What would be the best course for a child of that age?

    I questioned low stomach acid for years yet kept being prescribed more medicines, PPI’s and H2 blockers, until I felt like I was going to die. I finally quit them on my own and felt better. Three months later, after a thyroidectomy and resultant hypoparathyroidism I was prescribed high dose Tums for calcium. I’ve been sick all summer. I quit the Tums two weeks ago and rested my stomach from the alkaline gastritis. I ate a meal last night and am miserable today with the burning, nagging, gnawing stomach. I don’t know how often is OK to take the ACV or HCL drops. I have most of the symptoms listed for low acid: bloating, pressure, gas, burping, psoriasis plaques are back, zits, auto-immune diagnoses, chronic fatigue, alkaline reflux, dry skin and hair, broken finger nails. I’ve been eating homemade yogurt for probiotics, no wheat flour, no corn, no soda, healthier food choices but I drink a lot of milk, it helps my burning stomach feel better. Why don’t doctors listen to their patients? And why do they keep prescribing what doesn’t work? I have a bagful of bottles of stomach meds that I have to throw away and that makes me sick! I even had surgery for GERD but the pH was never tested, twenty years ago. Now I’m old, sick and feel hopeless, a huge part of my life was wasted feeling miserable. My gall bladder is bad but I don’t know if it the cause of my symptoms.

    i have stared going gluten free to see if that will help some of my tummy problems. since then however i have developed wicked heartburn/reflux. is there any link between the two things? what are a few things i should try to help heal this? i am thinking of going back to eating the gluten it was less painful. any suggestions would be great.

    Il tool prilosec one evening after eating because of having my gallbladder removed it was second time of making this mistake I had acid reflux all day and forgot by now I ingested one zantac 150 as well after the prilosec w/a full stomach I believe became so I’ll I thought I was dying I felt like I had to puke but didn’t have the strength.! Now I will never take proposed more than two days in a row nor will I ever take it at anytime other than first thing in the am w/ a glass of water. I’m still sick as I write this but its starting to subside. I wanted to post so if anyone wanted to know what I did to help myself……I sipped warm milk over an hour until it came back to slightly normal….. so I could sleep its 3 am…..

    Hi, Katy, sorry, I just saw this. I don’t crave milk, I drink it because it is soothing to my stomach. I drank only grassfed chocolate milk and organic skim for a week but I ran out and had to get regular, hormone-free milk, due to extreme weather recently …. my stomach is burning today. I also had some gluten, Sara Lee cupcakes, so it’s hard to say. I’m going to Iowa City in a few days to see my GI/pancreas dr re my gallbladder and an endocrinologist to address the low PTH/calcium/D3. I also drink milk for the calcium, forgot about that. I bought some calcium orotate as a replacement for Tums but I awoke with visuals and a migraine two days in a row, after starting the Ca orotate. I had a rough 3-4 months getting off the Tums and my stomach adjusting. I do better eating bad foods, candy. I get bloated and problems after eating protein.

    HCL is weak…the 300mgs dont do nothing untill i take like 60 of em. The only thing thats helping is acid cider vinegar like 100ml of it per food

    Hi, when I turned 30, I suddenly developed terrible heartburn, which I had never experienced before. I quickly found Prilosec and took it religiously. It didn’t seem to cause any problems and I ended up taking it for 3 years. I then developed what seemed like an intolerance to it, with symptoms similar to the symptoms I experienced in my 20s when I developed sensitivities to egg yolks, bananas, avocados, dairy, and iceberg lettuce. Bloating, severe pain and lower GI cramping. I began looking for a natural alternative to control my heartburn and found D limonene. It actually worked right away and was very effective. I took it for maybe 6 months and began tapering down. I’ve been off it for nearly 6 months, but pop one occasionally with heartburn flares.
    2 months ago for my 35th birthday I received a sudden new onset of severe rosacea. Do you think it may be related to having insufficient stomach acid production?

      hello! I was on protonix for a very brief period after omeprazole stopped working. Four days after taking the protonix i developed bloating,pressure, and stomach pains. The pain isnt common but the bloating feeling is constant. How long did that last for you? I was on the meds for acid reflux pains. Those are gone but this awful bloating feelig wont leave. Bitters has helped it some but ive only been on it a little over a week. I stopped the meds in december a week after thr bloating started. Thanks!

    I would like to say that having lemons is the best way of naturally increasing hydrochloric acid. I am proof of that. I have such low hydrochloric acid my stomach and as a result of this I was getting very little nutrition from my food. I soon became anaemic. I starting taking 1/2 lemon juice before each meal and after 1 month my iron levels increased from 5-over 120. IT WORKS! BELIEVE ME :)

    I have been taking HCL before every meal for 6 months.
    I take 650mg with 162mg pepsin capsules.
    I started taking this because of nighttime heartburn (waking me).
    Initially I took 2 capsules with before breakfast (32g of grains/currants/dried cranberries/prunes/banana/70g mixed berries), 4 before lunch (main meal: vegetable curry with chickpeas/falafel/chicken), 3 before dinner (same porridge as above plus a mixture of 1 piece of 72% cocoa chocolate/currants/pepitas/coconut/spices), and 1 with nightly melatonin.
    My heartburn episodes were reduced, but they still occurred, so I increased the HCL to:
    5 before lunch, and an extra one with night vitamins.
    Same result as above, so I increased again:
    3 before breakfast, 6 before lunch, 4 before dinner, 1 with night vitamins, 1 with melatonin.
    I have still had episodes of heartburn, but i feel like I am getting there.
    Obviously, having to take HCL for 6 months means my hypochloria was in the chronic region.
    I have been taking honey/apple cider vinegar/water before meals since 2009 as well, which I still take.
    I think part of the cause of my hypochloria was being advised by my TCM doctors in 2007 to drink more water each day. So I was drinking 2.5-3 litres per day which diluted my stomach acid and it also caused an imbalance in my sodium/potassium levels.
    I took a sodium solution and gradually lowered the dose over months until it righted itself.
    So take heart, your body wants to be in balance, it just needs your help sometimes, and your perseverance and patience.
