Yes, I know that feeling all too well.
So what do we do at Core Wellness Clinic when that 3 o’clock feeling sets in?
Salt, in the form of a comprehensive mineral salt like sea salt or Himalayan salt, is a wonderful therapeutic substance.
Sea salt contains an abundance of trace minerals in a balanced form. The body responds well to this salt.
Before you ask about blood pressure issues, know that a comprehensive, balanced mineral salt does not impact the body in the same way that straight sodium chloride does. Sodium in processed foods and straight table salt is the problem, not sea salt.
A meta-analysis in the American Journal of Hypertension found no strong evidence that cutting salt intake reduces the risk for heart attack, stroke or death in people with normal or high blood pressure. In fact, a study in JAMA reported that the LESS sodium a person excreted in their urine, the higher their risk of dying from heart disease!
Table salt, that you may be more familiar with, is mined salt that is refined, heavily-processed with chemicals, and contains mainly sodium and chloride. The other minerals are removed as they are considered to be impurities. Then they add a bunch of junk back into it so it won’t cake, as well as iodine so everyone doesn’t get a goiter. You don’t want to eat that.
How does sea salt help with your energy? Because it supports your adrenal glands. Your adrenal glands are little triangular glands that sit atop your kidneys and are responsible for secreting a variety of hormones and molecules that support life and homeostasis.
The quick and dirty: The adrenal glands secrete a mineral corticoid called aldosterone. Aldosterone works to reabsorb sodium via the kidneys as urine is formed. This sodium reabsorption is responsible, in large part, for your blood pressure and hydration levels, among other things. Low sodium levels can leave you feeling fatigued, dizzy and dehydrated.
There is much more to this, but I wanted to share this quick tip with you as I know that it will help many of you.
If you suffer from very low blood pressure, dizziness upon standing, and/or fatigue, give salt a try! As always, if you’re worried that this might aggravate a specific health condition, please check with your primary care physician first.
Salt for Energy: Take a small to moderate pinch of sea salt and either lick it off your hand or put it into some water. See how you feel. Perhaps try another pinch or two. Follow that with a good 8-16 oz of pure water (or mineral water). Try this the next time you feel your energy slump!

P.S. Another trick I do is to massage the area around the adrenal glands. You can find this area by putting your hands on your back at the level of the belly button, just at the bottom of your ribs, over your kidneys. Go in rotating, gentle circles for just a few seconds on both sides.
