You have tried all the recommended products and protocols – probiotics, L-Glutamine, chicken stock, removing problem foods, removing more problem foods! You have fine-tuned your digestion with the right diet and supplements – but you still cannot tolerate so many foods. Even worse, you seem to be reacting to more foods than when you started this journey. You removed gluten, went paleo and now you react to eggs or nuts or even avocado. What is going on?
Here are four reasons you are still reacting to foods.
1. You have underlying viral issues. It may be that you had chicken pox twice or even three times, this is a sign that your body didn’t quite deal with the underlying virus properly. It could still be lingering and stressing your immune system. Causing it to over-react to common foods. The same can be said for previous viruses that seemed to take a long time to shift – glandular fever anyone? Or maybe you have a case of chronic lyme disease? Viral issues can play a big part in chronic fatigue syndrome, it is worth thinking about your health history and discovering a plan to support your immune system in throwing off the virus for good.
2. You have chronic heavy metal exposure. Yup, amalgam fillings, occupational exposure, maybe household exposure. Sometimes the source can’t be traced. This exposure can constantly pull on your mineral reserves, leaving you depleted and unable to have a properly functioning immune system. Some metal exposure can leave you with depression and mood issues in the longer term too. Mercury exposure and candida overgrowth often go hand in hand. Candida and general gut dysbiosis can perpetuate a leaky gut. Candida sequesters mercury, holding on to it, trying to keep it out of the way, the chronic candida problem may not go away until the mercury is dealt with.
3. You are STRESSED! Stress will deplete the nutrients needed to rectify digestion and will promote a leaky gut no matter how cleanly you are eating. Stress can be physical or emotional. Anything from chronic pain to that morning traffic jam. Heavy exercise also induces the stress response in your body and sometimes reducing workouts or sticking to shorter session in the gym may be necessary.
Another ‘stress’ on your body which will stall your ability to heal your gut is continuing to eat foods you are reacting to. It is important to identify which foods are an issue for you and avoid them, if there are many look into rotating foods, at least every four days.
4. You didn’t give your body enough of the right nutrients to heal. Some of the often overlooked nutrients needed to heal and seal a leaky gut are – zinc, vitamin A, Omega 3 and vitamin D. Everyone is different and there is not a one size fits all approach. You need to look at not just nutrients that are currently lacking in your diet but also any lifestyle factors that might be present either now or in your past. In some instances we need to go as far back as childhood or your mother’s pregnancy to understand which nutrient deficits you might be dealing with now.
