Coffee, Coffee, Coffee

I want to write an ode to coffee. I do love it so.

I remember the first time I had a cup of coffee. I was 15 years old, I drank it black, and I LOVED it! I simply loved it. I loved the smell of it and the taste, and how amazing it made me feel!

Coffee truly fixes everything in my world. Just the smell of coffee when I walk into a coffee shop or grind it at home. It’s like, “Ahhhhh, everything is going to be ok.”

Some of you can relate. Some of you will curse me and call it a drug. And you are correct. But nearly everything you enjoy is a dopamine booster, and hence, a drug. Some of you love sugar, some of you love whiskey, some wine, shopping, cutting crisp vegetables, gambling, etc. It’s all dopamine-chasing. We are all chasing the dragon in some way or another.

So coffee made my lights turn on. I’m pretty sure that it’s a permanent part of my neurochemistry now. I’m fine with that. It works well for me. I’m a functional coffee-a-holic.

I still drink it black. When I was a punk rock teenager I used to order it, “Black like my soul,” because it would crack me up to see people’s reactions.

2013-present have been some BIG years for coffee science. Turns out this stuff is black gold! It is genuinely good for you in so many ways!

Just a few of the scientifically proven benefits of COFFEE:

  • Anti-depressant
  • Neuroprotective (keeps your brain happy/healthy)
  • Makes you smarter and more alert
  • Polyphenols! (Google that, it’s good stuff)
  • Significantly improves your physical performance (perfect pre-workout)
  • Loves the liver (protects the liver, this is a BIG deal)
  • Lowers your risk for Type 2 Diabetes (this is an even BIGGER deal!)
  • Lowers risk of stroke
  • Lowers risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Helps you BURN FAT!
  • Here are a few coffee “ground” rules now…

    Coffee 101

  • Buy organic
  • Grind and prepare fresh each day (you lose big health benefits if it sits too long ground)
  • NO SUGAR (I mean it, this is not the place to add more sugar to one’s diet)
  • NO DAIRY (binds up the polyphenols, big no-no)
  • NO POSER CREAMERS (those are artificial creamers)
  • Limit yourself to 3-4 cups a day to spare your adrenals
  • If you have known sensitivity and/or cardiovascular issues, please AVOID!
  • Beware drinking coffee late in the day if your sleep tends to be disrupted
  • “Caffeine” in energy drinks and supplements is NOT what I’m talking about here. This info pertains to COFFEE, as in the herb and medicine that comes in the form of the roasted coffee bean.
  • Coffee is a drug. A wonderful herbal drug. As with any drug, natural or synthetic, the magic is in the dose. Find YOUR optimal dose. Start slow and low.
  • So make it fresh, drink it black, no added sweeteners, don’t get completely cracked out on it and don’t mess up your sleep.

Your “Creamer” Questions answered (on the topics of non-dairy milks):

Most are full of sugar. Whatever nut milk or non-dairy milk/creamer that you want to use, look at the sugar grams on the back. I try to keep my total sugar grams a day well under 30 grams. Do the math and see if it’s high sugar. Anything with more than 5 grams of sugar per serving is high in my opinion. Then multiply by how many servings you intend to have.

PEARL: I put my collagen powder into my coffee. Easy and tasteless way to get it in during the day. Helps keep those joints happy!

I hope you go make and enjoy a cup of coffee now!

    In health,

    Dr. Tyna

P.S. DISCLAIMER!!! DON’T MAKE A HEART CONDITION OR ANXIETY WORSE BY DRINKING TOO MUCH COFFEE. Some of you can’t drink any without bad side effects. Be smart!! It is a drug after all. Check yourself, don’t wreck yourself.
